Workshops
A variety of exciting hands-on workshops will be offered at an additional cost. Times vary: Morning Workshop: 10 AM – 12:30 PM; Afternoon Workshop: 1:30 PM – 4 PM; Full Day Workshop: 10 AM – 4 PM with lunch break from 12:30-1:30 PM. Confirmed workshop leaders include:
- Sandor Katz, a world-renowned fermentation revivalist, will teach participants about the art of fermentation in this hands-on workshop. He will be joined by fabulous Atlanta fermenter and founder of Root Kitchens, Julia Skinner, as we dive into the science and art of fermented foods! Registration fee: $75. Full Day Workshop (10 AM – 4 PM). Location: Emory Student Center (ESC) MP1. Max enrollment: 45
- Elias Altman is a literary agent at Massie & McQuilkin Literary Agents, often representing experts, historians, critics, and scientists who want to share their deep knowledge with a broad audience through trade books. The secrets of agenting, editing, and trade-book publishing can feel as closely guarded as those of the magician and the escape artist. Like a sleight of hand trick, you marvel at a beautiful book at your local bookstore and say, How *did* they do that? Or, if you’re in the academy: How did *they* do that? Luckily for you, Elias can explain. In this workshop, a veteran literary agent will demystify the complex evolutionary process, speaking candidly and with humor about how to approach the task—from adapting an article or a dissertation into a workable book concept, to drafting a proposal, finding an agent, and navigating the publishing process. Registration Fee: $25. Morning Workshop (10 AM - 12:30 PM). Location: Candler Library (LIBC) 101. Max enrollment: 30
- Representatives of ADIE (Alliance for Diversity and Inclusion in Ethnobiology) will lead this fun hands-on workshop. What is the future of ethnobiology? What exciting possibilities do you see on the horizon? Share your vision and contribute to the creation of a mural expressing our collective aspirations. This is a great opportunity for first-time attendees to get to know other folks as we imagine and paint together. Artists of all abilities are welcome. Registration fee: $15. Morning Workshop (10 AM - 12:30 PM). Location: Candler Library (LIBC) 114. Max enrollment: 40
- Mushrooms are having a moment. Join Dr. Cornelia Cho, president of the Georgia Mushroom Club, and dive into the locavore, grow-your-own, DIY, self-sufficient, sustainable food production wave --- and learn a ridiculously easy way to grow your own gourmet mushrooms at home. No special equipment or training needed. Using this method, you mix three ingredients with water and completely bypass hours of energy-intensive pasteurizing. Set it aside to propagate and in three to six weeks, you can harvest, cook and eat the fruits of your labor. Registration fee: $30. Morning Workshop (10 AM - 12:30 PM). Location: Anthropology (ANTH) 105. Max enrollment: 30
- Social media: bane of our existence or excellent SciComm tool? It can be both! Alexis Nikole Nelson(@blackforager on IG) will teach participants how to use various social media applications for optimal science communication. Alexis worked in digital marketing for 5 years before leaving to make botany and outdoor education content full time for her 5M followers. Registration fee: $25. Afternoon Workshop (1:30 – 4 PM). Candler Library (LIBC) 114. Max enrollment: 40
- Morgan Ruelle and Ashley McGuigan will lead the Ethnobotany in R workshop! Have you always wanted to use R in your work but weren’t sure where to start? Are you an experienced R-user looking to gain new skills? Would you like to make connections with other ethnobotanists who use R? This workshop will seed an R-users network aimed at advancing the rigor of quantitative analyses and visualization in ethnobotany. Facilitators will demonstrate the use of R in their work: 1) analysis of functional trait diversity and 2) visualization of ethnobotanical interview data. We will identify R packages that are particularly useful for ethnobotanists and facilitate a ‘show and tell’ for participants to share some of their previous work in R. We welcome R-users of all abilities, including those who have never used R. We will tailor small group activities to levels of experience based on a pre-workshop survey. Registration fee: $25 (all participants also receive a USB drive). Afternoon Workshop (1:30 – 4 PM). Location: Candler Library (LIBC) 101. Max enrollment: 30
- TBD Contributed Morning Workshop 1 (10 AM - 12:30 PM). Location: Candler Library (LIBC) 122. Max enrollment: 20
- TBD Contributed Afternoon Workshop 2 (1:30 – 4 PM). Candler Library (LIBC) 122. Max enrollment: 20
- TBD Contributed Morning Workshop 3 (10 AM - 12:30 PM). Location: Candler Library (LIBC) 123. Max enrollment: 20
- TBD Contributed Afternoon Workshop 4 (1:30 – 4 PM). Candler Library (LIBC) 123. Max enrollment: 20

Join ADIE (Alliance for Diversity and Inclusion in Ethnobiology) for dessert and discussion of an exciting topic!
- Room 1 - The art of belonging: Whether we are students or faculty, many of us find ourselves the lone ethnobiologist in our department or university. We struggle to explain our (inter)disciplinary identities to our friends and colleagues. In this room, we will share experiences and identify strategies for professional growth, including sources of community and mentorship. Location: Candler Library (LIBC) 122. Max enrollment: 40
- Room 2 - Is data for the taking? In this room, we will discuss data sovereignty—the right of nations to govern the collection, ownership, and application of their own data. What challenges might data sovereignty pose for ethnobiological research? How might we contribute to data sovereignty through our research practices? We will explore these issues through a series of real and imagined scenarios, including ethical issues arising during field work and collaboration with pharmaceutical companies. Location: Candler Library (LIBC) 122. Max enrollment: 30
- Room 3 - Art and ethnobiology: How have artists contributed to the efforts of ethnobiologists? Where are new opportunities for ethnobiologists with artistic interests and skills? In this room we will explore the many intersections between our science and various forms of art practice. Location: Candler Library (LIBC) 122. Max enrollment: 20
- Room 4 - Organizational decolonization: In what ways do our institutions reproduce colonial power structures? How can we disrupt those? Where can we find alternative models? What can we do as individuals and what requires collective action? Location: Candler Library (LIBC) 122. Max enrollment: 20
