2025 - SEB Student Cafe - April

Flyer for the Student Cafe - April 2025

The SEB Student Cafes are a chance for students to learn and discuss specific areas of ethnobotany with experts whose careers focus on that area. These discussions are organized by the SEB Student Committee, and their goal is to broaden students’ perspectives and understanding of ethnobotanical work, to better inform their own research and career trajectory, and to build a professional network within their areas of interest.

The Biocultural World of Ethnobotany –
Insights from PPFTF IV

  • Join the April 2025 Student Cafe with Dr. Sonia Peter to learn more about insights emerging from the 4th edition of the Plants and Planting for the Future symposium which took place at the beginning of the month in Barbados. This year's symposium brought together experts in the fields of food systems, health and wellness, and conservation while exploring Bajan cultural traditions and ancestral knowledge.
  • Special Speaker: Dr. Sonia Peter

Sonia Peter is currently the Executive Director of the Biocultural Education and Research Programme and honoured to be President Elect of the Society for Ethnobotany. On earning her doctorate in natural products chemistry she began a journey of exploring the importance of plants to people, not only as sources of phytochemicals for drug discovery, but for the biocultural significance. This led to the establishment of the nonprofit Biocultural Education and Research Programme in 2017, the inaugural launch of the biennial symposium Plants and Planting for the Future in 2019, the establishment of an ethnobotanical garden in partnership with Andromeda Botanic Gardens in 2022, publication of the plant heritage book Yabisi Guada and development of an outreach programme for schools to sharpen student perspectives on the interrelationship between plants and people. She is co-founder of the tea brand Heritage Teas Barbados, the author of Seed Under the Leaf, the novelette Beyond Beleaf and a series of short stories.
